About Us

The Problem

Equine slaughter was once accepted and regarded as a fact of agricultural life.  This is no longer the case.  The elimination of equine slaughter in the United States has caused a radical increase in the number of horses available on the open market.  This influx of horses has flooded the market and drastically altered the supply and demand ratio.

Our Solution

I am a trainer/owner of 20+ years and have many references.  I saw the need to provide a sanctuary for unwanted horses.  I have extensive experience taking care of laminitic, navicular, and emaciated horses or horses with behavioral issues.  I discovered that there were a tremendous amount of horses in this country that people were wanting to give to a good home (many which have some sort of issue that comes along with them).  With a little bit of feed, or a little tuning up, most of these horses can become usable companions again.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to help the horses that can be and place them into suitable homes where they can become working partners or rest and retire.

Update: I hope everyone viewing our website will please read this and educate themselves.

As you all know..equine slaughter has been banned in this country. There are allot of do-gooders out there that think this is great. What they dont realize is that they have condemd these horses to a much worse fait. If you dont think so..do some research on how they slaughter in Mexico or the long trailer rides to Canada. NOT to forget the ones that are starving, beaten and turned loose here thanks to all of this. Its not the shippers that need to be blamed. We need to have a look at ourselves and the un-ethical breeding that fuels the fire. While we here at Equivive take the ones THAT CAN BE HELPED there quite a few that we do euthanize and feel its the best decision for that terminally ill horse. We have a passion for horses and want to help them but we are also realistic and know that only in an delusional world that you can help them all. We are strapped and running at maximum compacity along with allot of the other rescues in this country. My job isnt just to help all the horses I possibley can but its to educate people about the reality, expense and dedication of horse ownership and to understand that there needs to be a logical and humane system of handling the large numbers of horses that dont have a home. If you have any questions feel free to contact me and we can talk. Thanks Amy Zimmerman director
